Fire up the Sound, it’s Movie Time
Faizul Khan Tanim writes on the latest technology in home theatre systems and the reasons behind the transformation from 'pricey' to 'affordable'

1080P, High Definition (HD), 5.1 Surround Sound with woofer, DTS, Dolby, LED and LCD TV, 3D projection, the logos of DVD and BLU-RAY – somehow these terms have become an everyday part of our lives and we get mighty kicks out of either discussing them or even better…experiencing them.

It used to be that only rich neighbours could afford having a home theatre and we would just fancy them, dreaming to buy such things one day. With the advent of technology and our most loved statement – MADE IN CHINA, the world of home theatre systems is now in our homes and beyond.

Home theatres worldwide have become extremely affordable and much more advanced as well! You can have a mini cinema in your home that can display video in incredible 3D, and the clever technology of 5.1 Surround Sound with Dolby, DTS to blow your mind and turn your Simple Home into a Smart Home.

With prices of these home theatre systems dropping every day, recreating the cinema experience in your home is no longer just a dream.

And what exactly do our consumers look for? An HD TV (LED, LCD or high-end Plasma) with vivid, sharp images up to 3D; 1080P of video quality straight from BLU-RAY and this needs a sound system that will rightfully compliment - a surround system that matches theatre-quality sound. For the most affordable price, consumers can find comparable quality component systems.

A surround sound system consisting of satellite speakers, a centre channel speaker, and subwoofer which are easy to unpack, install, audio equipments which do not dominate the décor of the screening room and most importantly, provide amazing details in the resonance it reproduces…sound details of individual conversations in crowd scenes that generally sound like white noise.

Quality sound systems pick up every big sound like an explosion of a dynamite detonating on screen and even the slightest of sounds like the creepy sound of a door closing.

So if are you looking for an amazing, affordable home entertainment system that will really knock the socks off your guests, just browse the World Wide Web for the latest of technologies and voila!

Look up www.amazon.com and you will be able to find a range of home theatre systems catering to different budgets and niche audiences. For example the Sony DAVTZ140 DVD Home Theatre System is 120 US$ and features - 1080p up scaling to enjoy near HD picture quality, multi-format disc playback, audio input for MP3 players and other audio sources and all that jazz.

Meanwhile, there is a much more affordable solution (minus the disc player) - Creative Inspire T6160 5.1 Multimedia Speaker System and it is only 65 US$. And this system attempts to feature most specifications a BOSE sound system would offer, but of course that is impossible. However, for the price it offers, the features are fantastic - this system promises to thrill your senses with the vivid and panoramic experience of surround sound. The Creative Inspire system includes the Creative IFP (Image Focusing Plate), to improve sonic directivity and imaging while preserving tonal accuracy. In addition, the T6160 has the Creative Phase Cap incorporated for improved high frequency dispersion.

In the West, there are leading expert organizations in home theatre system design and implementation that offer consultancy to customers seeking a specific experience. They are highly professional in  helping you design a custom made home theatre system to fit your needs depending on the size of your house and budget.

In that part of the world, home theatre enthusiasts are more likely to follow the guidelines offered by the multimedia consulting experts, when setting up the new equipment. The consultants can be professional firms or websites, who offer advice such as - if one wants maximum output, it is critical to place the central channel speaker near the centre of the screen, to achieve the most natural sound which seems to originate from the centre of the screen. On rear project systems, owners can place the speaker above the screen.

Experts say that the placement of the central speaker should be flush with the edge of the mounting surface, or some distortion may inhibit maximum sound dispersion.

Front channels should be placed about six to eight feet from each other. Rectangular rooms offer best sound quality and the speakers should be located on the two shorter walls if possible. For a better effect, the rear speakers can be positioned at a hight of six feet and six feet apart from each other, which will enhance overall sound quality.

Many people intuitively think corners provide the best sound, but this location may actually produce the least desirable result.

The subwoofer can be moved and tested to choose the best location. When placed beside a front speaker, the blend of sound is seamless, but some volume will be lost. Wall placement, away from corners, can enhance bass performance by providing room for the sound to reverberate.

And thanks to technology coming from China, Taiwan, Taipei or Korea where implausible systems in very affordable prices are being produced, which were a dream even 10 years back. Nowadays, these sound systems even come with a remote control to bring ease to couch-eaters and aficionados, who would prefer to sit at home sipping a cold mocha, and enjoying the convenience of life brought to them by these extraordinary gadgets at extraordinary prices, instead of going to the movie theatres.

It doesn't really matter to me WHY home entertainment system is getting better and cheaper day by day. Now, even a mid-income guy like me can come home, turn on the 42-inch Bravia and enjoy a movie on the blu-ray player and have the feeling that I am in a movie theatre. It is an awesome feeling
