Social and Open Media with S Hides

Social and Open Media with S Hides

The first class with Dr Hides on 12/02/2014 dealt with the discussion of how the new media are transforming the cultural landscape of ours irrespective of geographical location.

1.      The key element to have come out is how we have created a virtual world of social media as opposed to traditional media. How e-mails replaced snail mails, how Twitter, Facebook and Instagram as apps have changed the way we behave and interact with the community and people around us...how we read more blogs and online newspapers than traditional hard copies...how YouTube has revolutionised our concept of a classroom (TedTalks) and more.

2.      These new Media are highly disruptive technology, for example how a Facebook message, SMS intrigues us to avoid the teacher’s lecture and try to focus replying to comments on Facebook because everyone wants to be a ‘social rock star’ and have his/her personalized digital identity.

3.      Social media platforms are always consuming large amount of data from us and at the same time feeding us, using the gathered data. For example amazon.co.uk stores our preferences in buying and later, they push those items for sale which were previously selected by us (a specific genre of music).

4.      In Broadcast Media – communication became one way whereas in social media, everyone has a say and everyone participates.

5.      Our media are no longEr dominant, which means we have the option to switch to multiple media outlets for the same story. For example the story on Ukraine can be heard from TV/Radio, read from newspapers and from online agencies and the Facebook world is there to see comments from the nationals of that country.

6.      We have become dependent on social media so much that we gave up the traditional means and becoming more ‘netizens’ than ‘citizens’.

7.      The next task was to divide in to groups and choose an element of Disruptive and Social Media to present in the next class.

The next class on 19/02/2014 mainly comprised of the many different Social and Disruptive Media tools like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube and more.

The class titled “The Researched Hub” essentially discussed the social media hub and the Network of Connected Hubs (ISPs). Then we went on to discussing the history of how ARPA and DARPA shaped up to be the modern-day INTERNET, networked communication at its best.

Looking at components like

1.      Network as Metaphor

2.      Search Engine Optimization and how it is helping our ‘preference bubble’.
