Absolutely ABBA
Absolutely ABBA
The band that redefined pop music with super-catchy compositions and sassy vocals is still filling dance floors. Writes Faizul Khan Tanim
ABBA came from Sweden, where they came together in Stockholm in 1972 and released their first studio album Ring Ring in 1973. But it was their second studio album, Waterloo, released in 1974 that gave them momentum and immense success.
And the group became one of the hottest musical names of all times. ABBA claims the honour of becoming the first pop group from a non-English-speaking country to enjoy consistent success in the charts of English-speaking countries with their tunes.
The name ABBA is an acronym formed from the first letters of each band member's first name - Agnetha, Björn, Benny and Anni-Frid.
They were influenced by The Beatles, Frank Sinatra, Bee Gees, Stevie Wonder, The Beach Boys and went on to influence others such as Ace of Base to Madonna, Wham, Kylie Minogue, A-Ha and many more. They became one of the most commercially successful acts in the history of popular music, topping the charts worldwide from 1972 to 1982.
ABBA sold over 375 million records worldwide, making them the fourth best-selling popular music artist in the history of recorded music. They still sell two to three million albums a year.
This second album is filled with affection, warmth and no matter how many times you listen to the songs, they never grow old. Whether it's the Caribbean-esque Sitting In The Palm Tree, the emotional Dance (While the Music Still Goes On), the urgent My Mama Said, Gonna Sing You My Love Song or the danceable tracks Waterloo, King Kong Song and Honey Honey – although the lyrics are famous for being cheesy, the album offers a variety of compositions and is definitely one of the best musical experiences.
