Faizul Khan Tanim gets nostalgic listening to the album 'Like a Virgin' only to realise how it revolutionised pop in the 80's
She's a rebel, she's a diva...she is the queen of pop and mesmerising forever! Madonna is an artist that greatly inspired acts as diverse as Sonic Youth, Britney Spears and Lady Gaga. And her second studio album Like a Virgin is one of those albums which still sound incredibly dated. It is one of those albums that defied odds and overturned the ways female musicians thought and delivered.
This album, released in 1984, was the breakthrough for her, thanks to the two massive hits Material Girl and Like a Virgin. Material Girl climbed to an anthemic proportion. The videos Material Girl and Like a Virgin might have featured mild notoriety but they were taboo-busting and made sure to inform that fame and power is not all that girls in showbiz look for.
The song helped make Madonna become the Monroe of the 80s and belong to a league of Michael Jackson and Elvis.
The first single, Like a Virgin, was a mega-smash hit, logging 6 weeks at number 1 and it would be 7 years before another song had that many weeks at number 1 - Bryan Adam's Everything I Do, I Do It For You.
The production on Like a Virgin was fantastic, featuring bouncy bass, upbeat synths and noise effects that the 80’s pop scene was defined by, but at the same time it did unique things and created a signature sound of happiness and melancholy melody as well.
But of course it was not only bounce and sex in the world of a Material Girl. Madonna’s greatest vocal performance of the CD comes with the dark, soulful and melodious track Love Don’t Live Here Anymore.
The songs from this record are much more diverse than on her first record, 'Madonna'. Her growth as an artist started from this album and continued over the next two decades. Although 'Like a Virgin' is not her best work but its ground breaking in the sense that , it ranks high up there since it dictated a new breed of pop music during the 80's.
