Faizul Khan Tanim visited “Rangeen Utshab - Festival of Colours”, an exhibition that was inaugurated on January 14 to mark 20 years of Aranya Crafts Ltd successes, organised in conjunction with Bengal Foundation at the Bengal Gallery in Dhanmondi.
A section exhibits foreign materials and cloths, all of which tell stories of vibrant colours and designs with natural dyes. There is also a video documentary running on a big screen which narrates the tale of how natural dye evolved and how it is used in our country.
The exhibition celebrates the revival of natural dyes in Bangladesh. The campaign began in the 80s with the intention of reviving indigenous crafts using locally sourced raw materials, using plant dyes that are eco-friendly and non-pollutant and to develop techniques to make natural dyes in a cost-effective and commercially viable way.
There are five categories of natural dyes, namely those extracted from leaves and flowers, such as casuarina, eucalyptus, tea, marigold, gulmohor and dahlia. The skin and roots, for instance, are of onion, pomegranate and turmeric. Others are from fruits and seeds like myrabalan and betelnut; from wood and sawdust, such as raintree, mangrove, jackwood, arjun, and the extract is from indigo and catechu.
Talking to DhakaLive, production in-charge of Aranya Crafts Ltd, Shamim Ara said, “This is a display of a travel story of rural Bengal and the proof of the rich repository of natural dyes that we have. Not only is natural dye more vibrant and eco-friendly than chemical colors but it matures with age when exposed to sunlight and normal use, developing a patina as colors mellow.”
The event was inaugurated by foreign minister Dr Dipu Moni. Also in attendance were industry president of World Crafts Council Usha Krishna, president of World “Crafts Council Asia-Pacific region Surapee Rojanavongse, Professor Perween Hasan from the department of Islamic History and Culture of the University of Dhaka and the pioneering woman behind the scene Ruby Ghuznavi, founder of Aranya Crafts Ltd.
